AQUAPHOR FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
  • Rinse your new jug and hopper (the top section which holds the filter) under running water from the tap for 5 minutes.
  • Immerse your new filter under water and shake gently for 10 minutes.
  • Put the filter in the jug hopper.
  • Fill the hopper – let the water filter through – and tip this water away – repeat this twice.
  • Your jug and filter are now fully prepared for use.

AQUAPHOR filters have multi-stage filtration technology which significantly reduces unwanted substances found in tap water.

  • In the first step, the fine particle filter removes large particles, sediment and rust.
  • In the second step, activated carbon absorbs chlorine and filters out organic impurities, including pesticides and herbicides and heavy metals.
  • In step three, an ion-exchange resin helps prevent limescale build up.
  • The fourth step has a fine mesh that filters out tiny particles.
  • And finally, the structure of our AQUALEN material ensures a consistent flow is maintained throughout the product to give long lasting performance and highly effective filtration.

There may be a small residue of black carbon in the bag or on the surface of the cartridge; this is normal. The carbon we use in our filters is derived from burned coconut husks – a natural and renewable source. These particles are harmless and are washed off during the preparation process.

One of the ingredients in our filter is activated carbon, which helps to reduce chlorine and organics, such as pesticides and herbicides. The carbon is in a very small particle form to ensure optimum treatment performance. Occasionally during transit, these particles produce a small quantity of activated carbon powder. This is what you can see in the bottom of your filter jug. Normally these finer particles are flushed out during the preparation of the filter i.e. by soaking and flushing or running the filter under a tap until clear.

The plastic materials used in the manufacture of AQUAPHOR jugs and filters are BPA free and meet the requirements of the European Materials in Contact with Food Regulations 1935/2004 ECV and the specific standards for plastics EU Regulation 10/2011 EC.

Our jugs are dishwasher safe – but lids should be washed separately in warm soapy water.

Most water filter jugs are sold showing their maximum capacity – for example our Fresh Jug has a capacity of 3.2 litre. This is the total volume of water which this jug can hold – but along with all water filter jug manufacturers, we recommend only filling to half this capacity at any one time. Fill the hopper – the part before the filter – first, let this drain through the filter – and then use this filtered water first before adding any more.

AQUAPHOR Maxfor+ filters are compatible with Brita* Maxtra* , Brita* Maxtra+* and water filter jugs, kettles and filtered water chillers which take oval shaped water filters – with the exception of those manufactured by Aqua Optima.

AQUAPHOR Maxfor+ filters are tested to both EU and Global water filter standards.

Blockages are often due to trapped air in the filter cartridge - we recommend the following:

  • Remove the filter from the inner vessel.
  • Shake the filter vigorously.
  • Rinse the filter briefly under a cold tap.
  • Refit to the inner vessel.

Simply remove the AQUAPHOR water filter from the water jug – place the filter in a sealed plastic bag and put it in the fridge to help preserve it. When you return, prepare the same filter as you would a new one. Place it back in the water jug and then flush it through twice with water before use.

This is quite normal. Our filters are sterilised using natural steam and sometimes this steam leaves a sterile water residue. This does not affect the filter’s performance, continue to prepare the cartridge in the usual way.

Our filters reduce the level of chlorine found in tap water – chlorine is put into tap water to inhibit the growth of bacteria and mould. If mould and bacteria appear present in your jug, simply clean the jug with warm soapy water – or a solution of a mild cleaning fluid like Milton™. After washing, replace the water and the filter, and ensure the jug is stored in the fridge.

Most of our jugs have a handy non-battery-operated mechanical counter on the lid – set this to zero when you first install a filter, and it will count round at every pour to show you when to change it. Alternatively, many of our customers simply put a recurring four weekly reminder in their phone calendar entitled “Replace the AQUAPHOR Filter”.

AQUAPHOR water filters are intended to filter potable tap water only and should not be used with water of unknown quality.

AQUAPHOR water filter are used in many countries. However, it is designed only for use with water that is already fit for human consumption.

Boiling water before drinking does not reduce Chlorine, Limescale, heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, microplastics or PFAS – in fact it may concentrate these impurities in water.

Your AQUAPHOR water filter will continue to reduce the impurities in tap water but at a lower level for some time after the recommended filter life has expired. Once the water filter is completely used up, the water will be the same quality as tap water. The water filter never releases any impurities back into the water.

No – impurities cannot leak back into the water when the filter is used up.

AQUAPHOR print a “made on” date on the side of all our filter bags – so we know when that filter was made.

AQUAPHOR filters will keep at least 5 years. They should be kept in the original packaging and stored out of direct sunlight and in a temperature of between 1°C and 40°C.

The AQUAPHOR Maxfor+ filter reduces Chlorine, Limescale, heavy metals, pesticides, and herbicides – as well as microplastics and PFAS.

The media in our AQUAPHOR Maxfor+ filter is known to reduce compounds such as trihalomethane, though we make no claims of it on our packaging.

The media in our AQUAPHOR Maxfor+ filter is widely reported to reduce PFAS in water.

Most people dislike the taste of Chlorine in water - our filter specifically reduces Chlorine and should deliver better tasting water.

No, this filter does not remove fluoride.

In areas with “normal” tap water – with a balanced level of Chlorine and Limescale hardness – the AQUAPHOR Maxfor+ filter should last for 200 litres or approximately 30 days.

No, this filter does not purify saltwater.

All AQUAPHOR products are made in Estonia in Europe.

This filter is compatible with Brita* Classic and most other round style water filter jugs.

This filter is compatible only with AQUAPHOR A5 water filter jugs.
