Why is there chlorine in drinking water and is it dangerous?

All tap water is chlorinated. Even if tap water has no specific smell, chlorine is definitely there. It is added at treatment plants to get rid of bacteria and other microorganisms. Everyone is familiar with the smell of bleach, and it’s not something you want in your kitchen or bathroom. Chlorine in tap water is inevitable since it’s a strong bactericide preventing the risk of infections spreading around.

However, in worn-out water pipes, chlorine reacts with other impurities and forms dangerous organochlorine compounds. If you regularly drink chlorinated water, immunity may decrease; kidneys, liver and lungs may suffer. It is especially dangerous for pregnant women and children. Boiling won’t help you get rid of chlorine — it is a mission of a reliable water filter.

How filters remove chlorine from water

A quality under-sink filter is an effective solution for removing chlorine and organochlorines from drinking water. AQUAPHOR filter cartridges contain coconut shell activated carbon, which adsorbs harmful impurities (not only chlorine, but also petroleum products, pesticides and other dissolved pollutants).

Pitcher filters are less productive than the bigger under-counter water treatment systems, but their filter media also contains high-quality activated carbon, which actively fights chlorine.

1. Deep water purification from chlorine and other dissolved contaminants

Coconut shell activated carbon is a powerful material to fight against dissolved impurities, and namely against chlorine and its extra harmful derivatives. Combined with the special ion-exchange microfiber, it delivers fresh and thoroughly filtered water very quickly!

The AQUAPHOR Crystal cartridges equal approximately 30,000 cups of delicious tea without chlorine aftertaste.

2. Chlorine removal filter for hard water and protection against all impurities

Reverse osmosis filters are the most advanced protection against chlorine and any other pollutants. A special membrane allows only water to pass through, and impurities (including hardness salts — the main cause of scale in the kettle) go into the drain. Chlorine, organochlorine and larger undissolved impurities are removed by carbon cartridges at the first stage of purificat on.

Special attention should be paid to AQUAPHOR RO-101S: this model is very compact, operates at low water pressure and reduces drain water consumption. Suitable even for very hard water.

3. Safe water without boiling

Hollow fiber membrane filters are an alternative to reverse osmosis filters for homes where water is initially soft. Carbon cartridges purify water from chlorine and its compounds, and hollow fiber eliminates bacteria and cysts without the use of any chemical bactericides.

4. Showering and bathing without skin irritations or hair damage

The smell of chlorine in water is unpleasant, and chlorine itself provokes allergic reactions. Sensitive skin (especially in infants) may become red, rash may occur, and hair becomes brittle. Moreover, inhaling chlorine fumes is bad for lungs. Bathing children, washing, taking a shower or a bath without these problems is possible with the help of whole-house pre-filters like, for example, AQUAPHOR Viking series.
